I’m so excited I can finally share some of the images we shot in Maui at Jill La Fleur‘s Workshop in January.  The photos above are literally from the first rolls of medium format film I shot…ever.  Jose Villa loaned me his Contax 645, and Joel Serrato showed me how to use it.  I was embarrassingly giddy when I first held that camera, and took my first rolls of film on it.  So much so that I forgot to take pictures of most of the gorgeous details that were all around us.  But luckily, I caught a couple of shots of this beautiful couple.

  • Erich McVey - Beautiful work, Nina! I can’t believe these are your first shots on the Contax. LOVE

  • admin - Thanks so much, Erich! You know that means a ton coming from you! 🙂

  • Abby Grace - Whoa, these are seriously beautiful. The middle image on the right is definitely my favorite!

  • alicia - just stunning. you and film are meant for each other.

I cannot believe they are two. I cannot believe that two years ago, we didn’t even know who these two amazing children were. We didn’t know their names. On the other side of the globe, a brave and beautiful woman gave birth to these two little ones, and she cared for them and loved them with all her heart. And then, by the grace of God, we were given the gift of continuing to care for and love them, and we were given the gift of being their mother and father. This will never cease to amaze me. And here they are today, growing constantly, learning new things every day, and just blessing our lives tremendously. Thank you, God, for these two precious lives. Happy birthday Alexander Mikiyas and Eliana Tizita! Mamma & Daddy love you!

  • Dianna Rucker - cute cute!!! love the decorations for their party too. Nina, have to tell you my daughter just had my first granddaughter July 3rd!!! 6 lbs 8 oz. Roslynne Mae. So sweet. Anyway had to share with you

  • Cara hochhalter - Absolutely precious and amazing. So excited for your blessed family! Beautiful!!

  • Kelli Nicole - Beautiful! Your children, your photographs, and what you wrote. Gave me chills. How lucky you all are to have each other!

  • Zandra - What do you use on your son’s hair? I have twin boys from Ethiopia and their hair is very similar to Alexander’s. So beautiful, but I am not sure what to use on it. Thanks.

  • admin - Hi, Zandra! Alex’s curls are very loose and soft. We don’t have to put much in his hair. When it is short like this, we just put a little of Carol’s Daughters Hair Mimosa in it to keep the frizz down. We also have Kinky Curly’s Custard which shapes the curls a bit more, and holds them in place better. And YAY for twin boys! Twins are the BEST!!!

  • Teresa - Your children and the pics are both so precious!

  • Julie Kellams - So precious.

To say we love this family is an understatement. But there just aren’t words to say how I feel about Tim & Kristi, and their amazing kiddos, Toby, Jesse, & Annie. Kristi and I went to college together, and we had such a special relationship. I love our talks together. It doesn’t matter how many years go by without getting to have a good heart-to-heart. The moment we get back in each other’s presence, it always seems so easy to be friends as we’ve always been. Tim & Kristi, along with the 3 young’ns, followed God’s heart across the globe, and are just in the States for a few months. SO thankful we got to shoot this session, and spend a little time with one of my best girlfriends from college. Love you, Meldrum family!

  • Anna Kim - I really love the colors in this set. Gorgeous work, as always!

  • nicole - beautiful nina! love the black and white shots!

  • Julie Kellams - I also love the details on this one. The carriage drive photo is incredible, and of course I love how you captured the landscape plantings and flowers.

Recently we took the twins to Shaker Village, a beautiful location just about 40 minutes from where we live. They were fascinated by the cooking fires and animals. We are always just fascinated by the beauty of old architecture and different ways of life. They show how the Shakers lived and worked. You can see the soap-making, broom-making, and sheep-sheering, all in one afternoon. Love it. Here are a few shots from our day.

  • Abby - Hi Nina, just found your blog and it’s already a favorite.
I love Shaker Village! Visiting there always makes me want to slow down, turn off the internet, and focus on making a simple, beautiful life. Your twins are so precious, looks like a fun day!

  • admin - Thanks, Abby! It is a special place, isn’t it?! I’m so glad we’re considered a favorite for you! Makes my heart happy. Cheers!
